About Us

Summer Experience 2025


The U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa offers a summer experience program for selected Japanese physicians and medical students (5th-year and above).  The program is designed to provide exposure to Western medicine and to introduce potential applicants to the fellowship program.
 
Selected externs will be accepted into a program explained in below. Externs will rotate through various specialties in the hospital with an emphasis on outpatient medicine.  Many externs will have opportunities to see and examine patients under the supervision of staff physicians. Applications for the summer externship are accepted between May 1st and May 15th.  There are a limited number of spots available.

Date

Week 1: July 7 (Mon) – July 11 (Fri)
Week 2: July 14 (Mon) – July 18 (Fri)
Weekly Structure (2-Part Format)
Mon/Tue/Wed: For PGY-2 and above applying for this year’s fellowship
Thu/Fri: For 5th/6th-year medical students and PGY-1 residents

Participants

6 participants per Mon/Tue/Wed Group, 4 participants per Thu/Fri Group
Total: 20 participants over two weeks

Program Details

Mon/Tue/Wed Group
Each participant will have one designated day to present themselves to the Program
Director.
Self-promotion session: Each participant will give a 5-minute self-introduction presentation on Monday. Each participant has 15-min case presentation on Tuesday and Wednesday, with 3 participants each day.
 
Thu/Fri Group
Participants will observe clinical rotations in departments of their interest.
The program includes lunch with current Japanese fellows and a guided hospital tour.
